UL Student Life President

1. The role of President, who shall be a member of the Executive Committee, shall: Be the prime representative of the Union and seek to involve as many students in the Union as possible .Attend Governing Authority and other relevant University committees, and report back to the Union. Be a cheque signatory to the Union bank account, if over the age of 18 Be the prime representative of the Union to liaise with the college over any matters affecting students

UL Student Life President

This role is a democratically elected position to be a student advocate representing the student body by sitting on UL committees ensuring the student's voice is heard and taken into consideration when the university is making decisions that directly impact the student experience. The student experience encompasses many aspects of academic and intellectual development; social and emotional life; and the growth and refinement of cultural, political, sporting, and artistic interests.

Main purpose

This role is a democratically elected position to be a student advocate representing the student body by sitting on UL committees ensuring the student voice is heard and taken into consideration when the university are making decisions that directly impact the student experience. The student experience encompasses many aspects of academic and intellectual development; social and emotional life; and the growth and refinement of cultural, political, sporting and artistic interests.

This role requires the Student President to sit on up to 40 university committees and have a seat on UL Governing Authority. He/she attends weekly meetings representing the students of UL. Therefore, it is critical to the success of the role that the Student President uses the correct forums to engage student opinion on a regular basis ensuring that all decisions taken are informed and are a true representation of the student voice of UL.

This role requires a close working relationship with the Student Welfare Officer, the Student Academic Officer, the General Manager and the Senior Management team to ensure that UL Student Life can continue to shape the student experience in a purposeful and meaningful way that align with our mission and vision statement.

 

Roles and responsibilities include:

  1. Chair the Student Executive for the academic year.
  2. Chair Clubs & Societies Council for the academic year.
  3. Attend all Student Council meetings ensuring reports are completed and circulated in advance so that Student Council and interested parties are kept up to date on your work.
  4. Ensure that each officer sitting on Exec compiles a final year report and a handover document on all activities they have completed in the academic year.
  5. Ensure all decisions made at Student Council are communicated to all the relevant groups i.e. Student Body, UL Student Life Staff, and the University; and are carried out in an effective and timely manner.
  6. Attend a weekly meeting and develop a positive working relationship with the General Manager.
  7. Attend and actively participate in all training programs designed to support the role.
  8. Establish methods for gathering information related to the student experience from students including feedback loops and assessment of student programming and events.
  9. Develop and maintain positive relationships with the student body through availability, creativity, credibility, and accountability.
  10. Work with the Marketing team to actively promote yourself, the work you are doing, and engage students via social media.
  11. Work with the Representation office ensuring regular feedback and updates are given on all meetings and work together on how best to support the student agenda at all times.
  12. Support students by referring them or their query to the relevant staff member or department either in UL Student Life or UL ensuring the student receives the best support and service at all times.
  13. Attend a monthly meeting with the Student Information and Support Coordinator, Student Representation Coordinator, and all other Student Officers to review cases of student support.
  14. Encourage students to be actively involved with the democratic and election process.
  15. Develop strategies to complete manifesto points.
  16. Support and follow the UL Student Life Strategic Plan ‘Taking Giant Steps’ to completion and work with the Senior Management team on preparing a new Strategic Plan for 2020.
  17. Be an ambassador for UL Student Life at all times advocating on behalf of the students. The role often requires liaising with the media, giving phone or radio interviews.
  18. Manage the Student President's budget and follow all internal financial policies.
  19. Grow and develop partnerships across all UL departments to assist current student representatives to carry out their responsibilities.
  20. As a member of the executive, the President will sit on the Management Committee and will be required to attend all meetings.
  21. The President will sit as a director for the ULSU Trading  Ltd Board of Directors and therefore on submission of their nomination form and subsequent election to the position they are accepting the position as a director on the ULSU Trading Ltd Board of Directors

UL Student Life Deputy President Welfare Officer

The role of Deputy President Welfare who shall be a member of the executive committee, shall: Liaise with the college over the criteria and distribution of the access and hardship funds In conjunction with the education officer meet with the college for the purposes of monitoring and review of the student charter, complaints, equal opportunities and disciplinary procedures Establish, and maintain, contact with and provide information from groups and organisations which work on welfare issues

Main purpose

This role is a democratically elected position to be a student advocate representing the student body by sitting on UL committees ensuring the student voice is heard and taken into consideration when the university are making decisions that directly impact the student experience. The student experience encompasses many aspects of academic and intellectual development; social and emotional life; and the growth and refinement of cultural, political, sporting and artistic interests.

This role requires the Deputy President Welfare Officer to sit on up to 40 university committees representing student welfare issues and have a seat on UL Governing Authority. They attend weekly meetings representing the students of UL. Therefore, it is critical to the success of the role that the Deputy President Welfare Officer uses the correct forums to engage student opinion on a regular basis ensuring that all decisions taken are informed and are a true representation of the student voice of UL.

  1. Co-ordination and delivery of welfare campaigns on relevant welfare issues as agreed by the executive committee e.g. debt, safe sex, drug/alcohol abuse,
  2. Oversee the student welfare office and ensure continuous reviews of procedures and policies.
  3. Provision and distribution of welfare information to the student body either face to face or other forums i.e. social media, posters, information leaflets.
  4. Liaise with the college over the criteria and distribution of the access and financial aid funds.
  5. In conjunction with the education officer meet with the college for the purposes of monitoring and review of the student charter, complaints, equal opportunities and disciplinary procedures
  6. Deal with, but not counsel, students who have welfare problems, referring to or engaging the services of the Information and Support Coordinator and the college counsellors or other relevant organisations ensuring to respect confidentiality at all times
  7. When necessary, refer students to attend any relevant training/briefing days for union welfare officers
  8. Liaise with the education officer on welfare strategy in the college.
  9. Meet with the student support services section and, when necessary, college management to assure the quality of services provided by the college to students
  10. Consult student services regularly to find out what problems students are having in college and take account of these when campaign planning
  11. Have responsibility for representing students in disciplinary or academic appeals cases
  12. Attend all Student Council meetings ensuring reports are completed and circulated in advance so that Student Council and interested parties are kept up to date on your work.

  6. Meet and/or liaise with the Student Academic Administration office to assure the quality of services with regards to information & support is provided to students.
  7. Have responsibility for representing students in disciplinary or academic appeals cases.
  8. Coordinate and Co-Chair Class Rep Forums.
  9. Work with the Representation officer on the recruitment, induction, training, and support of all class representatives.
  10. Develop communication forums to allow for consistent and regular feedback from class reps to department reps to faculty reps ensuring they have an up-to-date overview of the academic experience across all faculties.
  11. Attend all Student Council meetings ensuring reports are completed and circulated in advance so that Student Council and interested parties are kept up to date on your work.
